My favorite thing to do when putting a look together is to play with contrast. It has never been an intentional thing, but I always seem to mix “sweet” with a little “edge.” I started wondering why I do this, and when I stepped back, it all became clear.
When I was younger, I was always the really nice girl, the one who would do anything but speak her mind because she was too shy and afraid of being heard. As a result, I was a pushover, and it wasn’t a good feeling.
Over the years, I have grown more comfortable in my own skin. I know who I am now, and I want my outfits to communicate that. I’ve retained my sweetness, but have shed the layers that held me back, so by incorporating some “tough girl” accents into my outfits, I am telling the world (and reminding myself) that I’m not that same person I used to be. I have opinions, and those opinions have weight.
At the risk of sounding overly sappy, it is my sincerest hope that all of my readers know that their opinions matter. Don’t let others make you feel bad about yourself, because you are amazing! *muah* I love you all, and thanks for reading. 🙂

August 8, 2014 at 9:31 pmI think it might just come with being Asian. I have the same issue, but actually reversed. I used to be very outspoken when I was a child and then at some point in my life, I started caring a lot about what others thought of me. It wasn’t until I went to college that I started opening up more and voicing my opinions more. Anyway, love the booties! I always love adding edgy elements to my outfits. 🙂
